3 Areas to Stretch for Workplace Flexibility

3 Areas to Stretch for Workplace Flexibility 3 Areas to Stretch for Workplace Flexibility We go into work at 7am five days a week and dont leave until 8pm. Once at home, its making dinner, doing laundry and tending to family and/or pets. Finally the weekend comes, but our days pass by faster than we can blink with classes and practices, family and friends events and gatherings, and finishing up projects we began during the week. Before we know it, Monday has arrived and, with it, the same stress-filled, hectic cycle. Most employees are on a platzdeckchen work schedule and a platzset timetable for when things need to be done. Flexibility in the office is little to none for many workers. Yet, studies show that a flexible work life makes for a healthier life.Below are the three main areas that affect an individuals work experience- time, location and benefits- and how to make each one more flexible.TIMEAs stated before, most employees have a set work schedule, such as 9am to 5pm or 8am to 4pm. A lot of workers, especially those on salary, have a specified start and stop time for their work days but typically go past those hours by coming in much earlier and staying much later. Many times it is an individuals work hours that restrict him or her the most. Why notlage allow employees to create their own work hours? Certain situations (for example, those that are time sensitive like breaking news) may not allow this, but employers can try to be more flexible with when an employee must come into the office. Allowing a worker to set his or her own schedule, as long as either 40 hours (or whatever is required) per week are completed or as long as the required tasks are finished each day can offer flexibility for someones crammed schedule. Certain required hours for team meetings can be put in place to still ensure proper weekly communication with staff.LOCATIONAside from the hours, physically driving to and from the office can be a chore. Add having to be in the same sp ace (especially a small cubicle) each day risks having you wind up with disgruntled workers. Try adding the vorkaufsrecht of working from home. Employees can either work from home full-time or just a few days out of the week. A virtual work option gives workers extra time to handle other tasks they may not have been able to while in the office. They will also have the ability to take more breaks and unwind during the work process as opposed to constantly working with only one lunch break, if that.BENEFITS Vacation and sick time are very important for a worker because 1) everyone gets sick now and then and 2) every worker needs a vacation at some point. Many companies have the if you dont use it, you lose it policy when it comes to time off. Instead of an individual losing his or her vacation or sick time off, employers should give the option of donating. Perhaps you have a few vacation days left before the year is over and you dont plan to use them. Yet, a colleague would really lik e some time off to visit a sick relative but he or she has used up his or her vacation time. With a donation option, you can donate or give your vacation days to your colleague instead of the free time going to waste.Employers can also offer to buy back an employees unused vacation and sick time. The buyback funds would be added to the workers paycheck. This can be an incentive for employees to work more days out of the year, which could result in increased productivity for a company.Flexibility is not always an option in the workplace, but, if possible, employers should find a way to institute it more. Life situations can be unpredictable and often rarely adhere to set schedules and time frames. Being flexible when it comes to jobs shows workers that employers not only understand this, but are willing to do something about it.

Important People Dont Want a Cup of Coffee. Heres What to Ask for Instead

Important People Dont Want a Cup of Coffee. Heres What to Ask for InsteadImportant People Dont Want a Cup of Coffee. Heres What to Ask for InsteadIts the absolute worst sales technique you can do. These guys were billionaires. Do you think they really needed a cup of coffee? In a fascinating talk, James Altuczu sich explains that he used a terrible strategy when he compiled a list of 20 rolleal business heroes and asked them via emaille if he could buy them a cup of coffee and have 20 minutes of their time.He facetiously explains that he expected them to say, Hold everything James Altucher is going to buy me a cup of coffee. Ive never heard of this guy at all, and Im going to go downstairs right now and have a cup of coffee with him. Stop the whole business.Similarly, Ted Rubin makes it clear on his blog post that you should never ask people if you can pick their brain. Think about the phrase for a second- pick their brain- thats about as invasive as it gets. Its actually quite creep y I cant help but think of the ancient Egyptian mummification process, in which they would pick your brain through your nose, piece by piece. (You were already dead during this process, thankfully.)Remember that successful people are busy, and they view their time as their greatest asset. A cup of coffee is a poor return on their investment. If they spend 20 minutes with you, theyre spending 20 minutes away from their family, 20 minutes away from their business, and 20 minutes away from a million other possibilities. Even if they genuinely want to help, they cant possibly say yes to everyone who invites them out to a cup of coffee (or a creepy brain picking session). As Warren Buffett puts it, The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything. So, the question is How do you create a win-win situation? How can you get the opportunity to soak up the knowledge and wisdom of incredible people in your field, all the while giving them a high return on their investment of their greatest asset their time?Heres an idea thats worked for me a podcast interview. Why Podcasting WorksIll be the first to tell you that podcasting isnt for everyone. Ill also be the first to tell you that podcasting takes a lot of hard work (though thats true of anything worthwhile). But sitting down with someone and interviewing them for a podcast is incredibly valuable. In fact, its a win-win-win situation because there are three parties involved1. YouIf someone agrees to an interview, you now get to have a one-on-one conversation with him or her. Maybe its 20 minutes. Maybe its 30 minutes. Maybe its an hour. Regardless of the amount of time, you get to ask questions about this persons background, struggles, and successes, plus ask for advice. How cool is that? (And its free. Some business coaches charge $500 an hour)Not only do you gain priceless insight from your interview, but youre laying the foundation for a pe rsonal relationship. A tweet and an email can easily be lost in the noise. A one-on-one conversation is difficult to forget, especially when the other person gets to talk about him- or herself the whole time.2. Your GuestIf you can feature a successful businessperson or entrepreneur on a podcast and promote it to your network (and even beyond), this is great exposure. Perhaps this person has a new book hes promoting. Perhaps her business is launching a new product. Perhaps his service-oriented company is expanding. Whatever the case may be, the free exposure can be an exponentially greater return on someones investment than a $2 cup of coffee.3. Your AudienceDont forget about this one A well-done podcast offering encouragement, inspiration, and actionable advice can benefit dozens, hundreds, even thousands of people. Just remember Your audience is taking time out of their busy schedule to listen your podcast. Thats quite a privilege. Theyre never getting that time back, so honor the m by giving a return on their investment. Now What?So youve decided this is a good idea- now what?Ive run a podcast for about eight months now, and Ive interviewed more than 50 people. My business partner and I started from scratch and- time and time again- weve been pleasantly surprised (pleasantly shocked is more like it) by the generosity of leaders in our field, as well as the other bloggers, podcasters, and publishers weve connected with. That said, its bedrngnis all fun and games. Here are a few things Ive learned along the wayBe ConsistentIt will help you become a reliable authority. I recommend releasing one episode per week. If youre highly ambitious, you can release three episodes per week, but trust me Thats easier said than done. There isnt a magical day of the week- Monday isnt better than Thursday- the key is to pick a day of the week and own that day. Become a reliable source for your audience and train them to know when they can expect a new episode.Streamline the Form atImagine your favorite show was 15 minutes long one week, two hours long the next week, and 37 minutes long the following week. You would probably be confused and frustrated It would be difficult to plan your life around such an arbitrary schedule, even with all of our fancy streaming and recording tools. Plus, the people you interview will want to know exactly how much time you will need. Its your call, but a 30-45 minute interview is probably the right amount of time if youre bringing on guests. Ask NicelyWhen pitching to potential guests, start by building a relationship with them on social media. Almost all of my guests started with a tweet. Sometimes I compliment their blog post, sometimes I tell them I loved their book (Im always genuine when doing this). After you get the ball rolling with the Twitter conversation, move to old-fashioned email and ask them to be on your show. Keep this email as short as possible, of course. Remember, theyre busy and they definitely dont have time to read a novel-sized email (which can easily happen when you get nervous and excited). After you get a few guests under your belt, the pitching process becomes easier. You build a bit of a portfolio, which is great for sharing with potential guests. Many of them may think, Well if this interview was worth so-and-sos time, it should be worth my time too.Be a Great InterviewerJust like youd do if you were sitting someone down over coffee, do your prep work. Research the person youll be talking to, practice your public speaking skills, and draft up great questions ahead of time. What to ask? If youre bringing industry experts on your show, ask about their industry. Ask for tips, mistakes to avoid, and personal stories about their background. Think of Jimmy Fallon or Conan OBrien. Theyre always looking for more than the celebritys upcoming film. Theyre looking for funny behind the scenes stories. If youve ever said, Id like to buy you a cup of coffee and pick your brain, dont feel g uilty. Ive made this rookie mistake, myself. I even tweeted a similar question to Gary Vaynerchuk once. (He responded and very kindly explained that time was the one thing he couldnt spare.)But do get creative- and look for other ways to get that career-boosting advice you need.Photo of coffee courtesy of Shutterstock.
